Prof. Wang Shouyang Delivered a Lecture in SBM

On December 7, 2018, at the invitation of SBM, Prof. Wang Shouyang, Distinguished Research Fellow with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changjiang Scholar, Distinguished Young Scholars of National Science Fund, and Dean of the School of Economics and Management, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a lecture in Classroom 2220, Songjiang Campus. The topic of the lecture was “TEI@I Methodology and Application in Economic Analysis”. SBM Dean Pan Yu, Vice President Wang Fenghua, Vice President Yang Xiaolan Dean, Vice President Wu Yunqiao, staff from the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Information Management, as well as graduate students and senior undergraduates, attended the lecture.

Prof. Wang is Distinguished Research Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Distinguished Professor of the Changjiang Scholars Award Program, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Fellow of the Academy of Developing Countries, and Fellow of the International Academy of Systems and Control Sciences. Professor Wang received his Ph.D. degree in Operations Research and Control from the Institute of Systems Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1986. He is currently Dean of School of Economics and Management, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the Center for Prediction Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Wang has served various senior academic positions, such as editor-in-chief, executive editor, deputy editor or editor of 16 internationally renowned journals, such as Energy Economics and Information and Management, and 8 major domestic journals. He has also served as Chairman of the International Society of Knowledge and Systems Science, Vice President of the International Institute of Global Optimization, Chairman of the China Society of Systems Engineering, and member of the Advisory Committee of the Management Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation.

Prof. Wang is committed to research in such areas as decision analysis, conflict analysis and systems engineering. He has coauthored, with domestic and foreign scholars, 18 monographs (including 7 in English by Springer-Verlag), edited 12 collections of papers (including 7 overseas publications), and more than 170 papers published in European and American academic journals, among which are 138 SCI and SSCI papers. He has also submitted more than 90 policy research reports to central and state ministries (13 reports were submitted directly to Premier Wen Jiabao), and many policy recommendations were adopted by the central government. His research achievemnts have won numerous provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (Natural Science Award), among them are three first prizes, five second prizes and three third prizes. He has also the Young Scientist Award from Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Youth Science and Technology Award and the National Outstanding Youth Fund.He is also winner of the first batch of the first and second levels of the “Key Talents Program” of the Ministry of Personnel (1996) and the “Hundred Talents Program” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1996).

In the lecture, Prof. Wang illustrated the application of “TEI@I” method in areas of decision analysis, conflict analysis and system engineering. He also led a discussion on the difficulties in applying TEI@I method to national economy research. These include successful predictions of China's GDP growth, Chinese prices, Chinese housing prices, oil price forecasts, and economic and financial forecasts. In the past ten years, the research at the Center for Prediction Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has provided important support to the government's macro decision-making. Many institutions in the West, including the media, claim that the Chinese Academy of Sciences Forecasting Research Center is a think tank, or an important think tank, of the Chinese government.

After listening to the lecture, SBM staff and students learned about the current status of research carried out in the field of economic forecasting using TEI@I methodology. and therefore lecture won enthusiastic response from teachers and students. In the Q&A session, some young teachers exchanged views with Prof. Wang on the application of the “TEI@I” methodology in the field of economic forecasting. Many students also asked questions on such topics as price prediction, EMD-based event analysis approach and EMD method feature extraction and analysis”, and Prof. Wang responded with detailed ansers. This lecture by Prof. Wang provided a succint explanation to help students and teachers better understand “TEI@I” method, and enhanced their interest in this area. Finally, Dean Pan Yu delivered a thank-you speech on Prof. Wang’s excellent lecture.
