Enrollment Guidelines of 2019 Shanghai Graduate Summer School of “Frontier Theory and Fields in Management Research”

The Shanghai Graduate Summer School of “Frontier Theory and Fields of Management Study” will be held from July 8th to 21st, 2019 at Songjiang Campus of Shanghai International Studies University.Commissioned by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Office of Academic Degrees Committee, this summer school will be hosted by SBM of SISU.With a clear focus on the front fields and new methods of modern management study, this summer school aims to enrich traditional business studies with a more scientific touch. Multiple research fields are open for discussion, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, empirical research of business management, research of operational and marketing model along with behavioral and neuroscience experiments.Distinguished scholars from home and abroad will gather around to share their research ideas and research methods to the students.We sincerely welcome graduate students and young teachers from all over the country to sign up for an extraordinary summer!

SBM has not only inherited SISU’s seventy years of academic excellence, but also remained vitalized in today’s fast-changing and tech-driven world. For years, the school has stood firmly at the forefront of academics, cultivated generations of international and extraordinary individuals and grown into the best management school of its kind through the unremitting efforts of school faculty. The SBM was approved the first-level discipline to award the doctoral degree of Business Management. The doctoral program has four research directions: consumer behavior and neural decision-making, information management and digital marketing, corporate strategy and cross-cultural management, financial technology and corporate finance. The school has always been emphasizing cross-discipline study, calling for further integration between different subjects, deepening and enriching traditional research content. The school also has a Master program in Business Administration (MBA), which is listed in “Shanghai’s First Class Discipline Building Plan (type B)”.

The course structure of the SBM is based on the construction model of mainstream international business schools such as Wharton. It has gradually introduced talents from world-class universities such as the University of Pennsylvania, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Cambridge, and has established a team of outstanding educators led by Changjiang scholars, scholars from “the Thousand Talents Plan“, Eastern Scholars (The Program for Professor of Special Appointment at Shanghai Institutions of Higher Learning) and chief experts on Major Projects of National Sciences Fund. Together as one, the school faculty will jointly bring disciplines to a higher ground and establish a well-designed cultivation system in line with the national strategy.

This summer school for graduate students will be held at SISU from July 8th to 21st, 2019. Our school will invite distinguished professors from Purdue University, the University of North Carolina, Quebec University, Peking University, Fudan University, University of Electronic Science and Technology, Hong Kong Chinese University, East China Normal University and other well-known professors to come to our school and communicate face-to-face with all summer school students. Through special lectures, academic reports, paper seminars, and teacher-student exchanges of other forms, this summer school aims to stimulate students' academic interests, expand their academic horizons and promote deep academic communication.

1. Curriculum of the Summer School

The summer school focuses on four areas of study, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, empirical research of business management, research of operational and marketing model, behavioral experiments and neuroscience experiments. All courses are taught by well-known professors from home and abroad. The course format includes special lectures, academic reports, paper seminars, and teacher-student exchanges. Professors from the SBM are also invited to participate in various activities to introduce the research characteristics, training objectives and faculty of each major and direction to the participants.

     Excellent students who meet the criteria for applying for the doctoral program in our school will be invited to participate in the selection and evaluation for doctoral candidates at our school in December this year.

Teaching Staff Introduction in Detail

Feng QiQi Annabelle Feng  is a Professor of Management at Purdue University and a  John and Donna Krenicki Chair Professor of Operations Management.Her research interests include procurement and inventory management, design and manufacturing outsourcing.Her works have been published many times in top international academic journals such as Production and Operations Management and Management Science.

Ren Rongrong is an associate professor of strategic management at the Fox Business School at Temple University in the United States. He is also a senior research fellow at the Mack Institute for Innovation Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.His research is focused on competitive strategy, innovative management and entrepreneurship, along with organizational learning.Many of his papers were published in top management journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Management Science and Journal of Management.

Zhang Dongsong is a Belk Endowed professor of Department of Business Information Systems and Operations Management at the University of North Carolina (UNCC) and a full-time professor in the Department of Computer Science. His research interests include mobile HCI, social media analytics, and more.About 150 of his research papers were published in various journals and conference proceedings including MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems (JMIS).

Zhang Bohui is the Executive Vice President of the School of Economics and Management, Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and a Principal Chair Professor.His main research interests include the impact of information media on capital markets, capital markets and financial markets both at home and abroad.His research results have been published many times in top international academic journals such as Journal of Financial Economics and Journal of Accounting Research.

Zhou Xiaolin is a doctor at University of Cambridge, Changjiang Scholar, former Director of the Center for Brain Science and Cognitive Science of Peking University, member of the Psychology Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Chairman of the Steering Committee on Psychology Teaching of the Ministry of Education, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Psychological Society and Director of the Chinese Society for Cognitive Science. His research methods include behavioral experiments, gene-testing and gene-correlation, EEG recording, and magnetic resonance imaging of brain function.He has published more than 100 papers in international SCI and SSCI publications, and nearly 100 papers in domestic academic journals.

Bram Cadsby is a professor at the University of Quelph, Canada and an associate editor of the Journal of Behavioral & Experimental Economics. He has served as a visiting professor at universities in China, Australia, the United States and Japan.His main research interests are experimental economics and experimental finance.His research papers were published in journals including Games and Economic Behavior, Review of Financial Studies.

Yuan Hua is a professor in the Department of Management Science and Electronic Commerce, School of Economics and Management, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.His research interests focus on machine learning and business intelligence, information management and decision analysis, and digital marketing and social computing.His research results were published in the mainstream academic journals of information systems such as Decision Support Systems and Information Sciences.

Mainly engaged in psychology and neuroscience research, Cai Qing is a professor of Psychology from East China Normal University. Her research works were mainly published in journals include the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) and Neuropsychologia.

Tian Lin is an associate professor at the School of Management at Fudan University.His main research areas are sharing economy (collaborative consumption), e-commerce platform model, cross-disciplinary research on operational management and marketing.His research results were mainly published in well-known journals in operational management and marketing study such as Management Science and Marketing Science.

Shen Rui, Associate Professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen).His research interests include heterogeneous understanding of accounting information, capital markets, and corporate decisions.His research results were published in top journals such as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and the Strategic Management Journal.

3. Application Pre-requisites

All applicants should meet three standards shown as follows:

1.Graduate students in the first and second grades.

2. Present strong interest and ability in academic research and qualified skills in both oral and written English.

3. Professional backgrounds include but are not limited to management, economics, psychology, mathematics, statistics and computer science.

Free meals and lodging will be provided for non-SISU students during the summer school.
