hanghai International Studies University (SISU) has initiated multiple employment-related projects, including video tutorials, model recruitment competitions, and paperless recruitment platforms, given that offline approaches to jobs have been cancelled because of the epidemic.

SISU offered senior students individualized online career guidance. Liu Jian, counselor of SISU’s School of Germanic Studies, posted his original animated videos on Wechat and Tik Tok, introducing graduates skills for resume writing, emailing and online interviews. Liu said that despite stress and disrupted plans, students were adapting themselves actively.

“I had applied to study abroad, but the worsening epidemic forced me to think of another plan. Then I went to the job fair for the spring semester as the counselor suggested.” Zheng Siwei, a senior student from SISU’s School of Germanic Studies, said. Due to the delay of PGH, a German proficiency test, Zheng aborted the initial plan, and was employed by the public relations department of a foreign company with the counselor’s help.

SISU’s School of Germanic Studies issued a letter earlier on Wechat, expressing gratitude for the support from employers and SISU’s alumni. Many alumni responded in less than a day with a wish to provide employment information and long-term career guidance.

To improve students’ abilities, SISU simulated an online recruitment competition. The enterprises like the Bank of China and Unilever guesting tested students’ comprehensive ability including resume writing, innovation and resourcefulness. A one-to-one online job interview with the human resource manager enabled students to know their strengths and weaknesses.

“The university attaches great importance to the  employment of the graduates,” said Cao Shujing, director of SISU’s Career Centre. “Multi-channel employment based on personal qualities is suggested since there are various employers to choose from, such as infrastructure projects, public institutions and state-owned firms. Excellent graduates are encouraged to go to international organizations and outposts of large enterprises.”

SISU has released 594 recruitment postings, and gained 88,965 demanders since January this year. A paperless recruitment platform was launched in late February to enhance the employment efficiency. The platform was expected to operate in early May.

SISU has also started “lighthouse”, an online consulting room, to offer one-to-one guidance.  Moreover, graduates could have free access to over 10 online courses on employment guidance and hundreds of relevant videos.
